can my 8 year old make a choice to spend the weekend with his father or do i need to force him to go

You need to force him to go. Visitation, if ordered by the court, must be conducted. It is the right of both the child and the parent. It is also an order to you to prepare the child to see the other parent. If you don't send the child, against his wishes or not, you can be held in contempt of court for violating the court's order.
