Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

are 17 year olds by law an adult?

I have caught my daughter on my space talking to a 31 year old convict.Yesterday her father actually caught her with him at his apartment. He claims that we cannot do anything because she is of legal age at 17 years old. Please tell me if this is so, and what steps we can do to protect her. Thank you.

Re: are 17 year olds by law an adult?

Hello and Happy New Year. This is a very serious matter. I suggests that

you get an order of protection on behalf of your daugther. She is still

a minor and I would act now while she still is. This young man will, in my

opinion, shy away from the Court process because he does have a record,

assuming that he has been convicted of a crime. I suggests that you act quickly. Of course she is below the age of consent and statutory rape is

a felony. By the way, make a police report now as well. I think that you

would be on solid ground if you told

the reporting officer that this 31

year old is contributing to your daughter's delinquency and is trying to date her. I will be happy to discuss this with you further and in more detail. Be very careful. The next time you think your daughter may

be with this person, I suggests you call and bring the police with you. The chances are that the police will arrest this guy in the spot.
