Adoption/Name Change

I have a son from a previous relationship. My husband would like to adopt him. We have no contact with his biological father, who lives out of state. We do receive child support from him through the IL state disbursement dept. I have tried to contact my ex through e-mail, calls to all phone Numbers i had for him and his family, yet have not been able to locate him. My son will start school soon and we all would like him to have his name changed before school starts, to avoid questions that may arise from classmates further down the road, as well as my son wanting to have the same name as the rest of our family. We will continue with all adoption proceedings, but if this is going to be a lengthy process, we would like to get his name changed in the meantime. Any advice?
