Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

alimony

My neighbor was married for about one year and divorced. She and ex husband got back together and have been living together for 12 years. They recently purchased a home in her name only since he had bad credit and previously filed bankruptcy. He has now left and she cannot afford the home on her own. I know Illinois is not a Common Law state, but can she take him to court for monetary support to keep her home? They did not remarry and have no children together.

Re: alimony

Greetings- I am sorry to hear that your

neighbor decided to buy her house based upon

the apparent promise of commitment from her

live-in ex-husband. My answer is "probably

not". Your neighbor and ex-husband divorced

and apparently she had no agreement in writing

where her ex-husband promised to contribute

to the mortgage. The moral of the story is

when you untie the knot, tie it back when

you decide to live together with the the same

person that your knot was untied from!
