Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Broken Engagement

My sister had a fiance who recently broke the engagement on terms that he is not ready. Now, she had just moved from florida and started a new job in Illinois to be with the ''groom''. Within a week he broke the engagement. I was wondering if there were any laws about the financial aspect of broken engagements. Isn't the party breaking the engagement responsible for expenses enccurred thus far. I mean its not mutual. Anyway I was also wondering about leases. She had only lived in the apartment for a week, but she did sign a lease. On the other hand, would she really be expected to stay at the apartment and pay the lease after that? There must be some kind of contract break for circumstances like this. Would a small claims court be the best place to go. I belive the wedding planning expenses were less than $5000. Thanks.

Re: Broken Engagement

Unfortunately your sister is out of luck. She's stuck with the lease if it's in her name, and all the expenses she incurred, and if she defaults it'll be her credit that's damaged.
