Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
Changing My Son's Last Name
My son was given his fathers last name at birth, but his father is a ''holiday daddy.'' We just dated for several months before I got pregnant, and he has two other children (that's where his time and attention goes.) Every one told me my son should have his fathers last name because ''that's his father.'' I figured (after the fact) that he should have mine because I'm the one raising and taking care of him. My name should be carried out. I was thinking, maybe I should get it hyphenated, but I haven't decided yet. I would just like advise about how to legally get started on the process. He turns 1 in mid-May. I heard if I change his name before he's 1 it'll be a little cheaper. Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated and anticipated. Thnx Ms. Singleton

Re: Changing My Son's Last Name
Legal change of name in Illinois is relatively simple. Obtain a form (Petition for Change of Name) from the county clerk's office, the internet, local attorney, legal forms store, etc. Any change of name, so long as it is for a legal purpose and not to misrepresent or for fraudulent purposes is approved by the court. You will need a certified copy of his birth certificate.
