Child Custoday

My son's father has not been involved in our lives since I was 5 months pregnant...I don't even thing I have current contact information for him. Is it nessecary for him to sign his rights away? He lives in Florida, I live in Illinois...

Well, you can go through a process where the court finds the parent 'abondoned' the child and then the person will lose his rights. Such an action would be filed in IL. I have handled such cases in the past, the key is to satisfy the notice requirements and so on so that the father cannot come back years from now and overturn the court finding because it was not properly handled.
