My son's girlfriend became pregnant and then immediately after find this out, she broke off all communication with my son except for text messages and e-mails. My son is heartbroker and is wondering what his rights will be concerning this child especially since the mother and her family are all on public aid and their living conditions are not the most desirable.

He can file an action to establish paternity and he can try to get custody of the child or at least visitation. At this stage, he should probably avoid making any serious threats of litigation because the easiest thing will be if the mother admits paternity.
With that said... before your son says he is the child's father, you want to make sure that he really is. There are many unfortunate cases where the mother has lied about how she got pregnant and a young man is stuck paying child support for a baby that is not his. Once you are found to be the father by a Court, it is almost impossible to change that fact.
