Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Child custody & support payments

When our son was born I paid for his support even tho his mother & I were not together. I did not document the pmts - many were in cash. She later took him out-of-state and collected welfare plus continued to receive my payments. Now I am being held liable for what the state gave to her and my wages are being garnished. One year ago my son came to live with me. My wages continue to be garnished even tho I am paying everything with no help from her. I can hardly live on my income supporting him and myself and having my wages garnished also. I have talked with two attorneys and both want $1,500 to look into it. I simply and truly cannot afford that. Is there anywhere to go for help for free or at least a reduced scale? I would be thankful for any help at all.

Re: Child custody & support payments

I'm dealing with this exact situation with a client right now. Some things you can change and others you can't. If the mother had custody and received public aid, then the state where she got the aid is going to come after you because the mother gave them that right. Have you stopped the current support from running? You need to do that ASAP. Also, are you receiving support from the mother? I need some more details but you can probably make some inroads. Give us a buzz.
