how old does a child have to be before they can pick which parent they want to live with?

The input of the child is only 1 small factor in the custody decision. The judge can talk to the minor child(ren) in what's called, an "in camera interview." However, historically their preference carries little weight. Ultimately the child rep/GAL will carry more weight if push comes to shove in Illinois.
