Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Does child support continue past the age of 18? Divorce decree gives the date in which my youngest turns 18, however she will still be in high school for 7 more months. Do I have to bring this matter to court or will the child support enforcement office handle this?

The answer to your first sentence is that it can. Divorce courts are said to have "continuing jurisdiction" over these cases -- which is why you've probably heard of people going "back to court" to get their divorce decrees modified for one reason or another. Assuming you had an attorney for the original proceeding, you should consult him/her. Whether you are the parent who is owed the support for your child or owes the support, you may want to have this clarified. That is especially the case if you are the parent who is owed the support and the parent who owes the support stops. Frankly, if your daughter expresses an interest in attending college after high school, and is admitted, a court could modify the decree and make one or both parents contribute to her effort, depending on financial ability and other factors.
