received a letter from attorney for status hearing. what does this mean?

A status hearing is a court date in a pending case at which both sides must appear. It sounds to me as if you are not represented by legal counsel but someone on the other side of the case has a lawyer. This usually presents a very unfair, although legal situation. You should consult with, and hire, an attorney.
