Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

When does Childsupport end?

My daughter is 18, and pregnat. She has one more year of high school left, but not sure she will finish. She got arrested for burglery and now faces a felony. She is staying away from home for a week at a time. My exwife takes the support and my daughter never sees a dime of it. When do I no longer have to pay support to my exwife. She was arrested for stealing food cause she was hungry and was not close to home. and had no way to get there. I want to help my daughter but not keep lining my exwifes pockets. She is married to a man who makes more then I. I have never not paid my support but think its time to end.

Re: When does Childsupport end?

First, you need to check the terms of your divorce decree. It should indicate when child support is to terminate. If it is when your daughter turns 18, as is often the case, then your obligations are over. If there is a witholding order in place, you would need to go to court to have that terminated. If there are other provisions regarding continuing payments as long as your daughter is in school, then you need to go to court to have that modified based upon the circumstances you describe.
