Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Civil Unions in Illinois

Why do some web-sites say you should NOT enter into a civil union if:

* Either partner is a foreigner without permanent legal status in the U.S.

.

I understand a civil union is not acknowledged by federal law & therefore cannot offer any support towards citizenship but can it do harm? If you are in the US legally on a work Visa or temporary/permanent residency can a civil union threaten your legal status or cause problems in some other way for you?
