Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

College tuition & living expenses

Are parents obligated to pay college tuition costs and living expenses once the child reaches 18 years of age? My ex-husband claims that his support ends as soon as our son leaves for college and I am left to cover the expenses outside of financial aid by myself. Can my ex-husband be legally obligated to pay part of the costs?

What does your divorce decree say? If it states your husband is obligated to pay higher education costs then you will need to bring him back into court and have a court order it. However if the decree is silent regarding this matter then I doubt a judge will force your ex to pay the costs.

No parent is legally obligated to pay for higher education costs even if there is no divorce.
