Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

deadbeat father of unborn child

I am currently pregnant with a man that I have only casually known against my better judgement. When I told him I was pregnant he ''disappeared''. I know I can find him if necessary. Can I legally make him pay for half of an abortion? What rights do I have to make him ''man up'' to this situation?

You cannot make him pay half the cost of abortion, but you can present him with the alternative. 20% of his net income for the next 18 years.

No, you cannot make someone pay half the cost of your abortion. The only costs a biological father is responsible for is child support. The purpose of child support is to benefit the child. Abortion certainly won't count as benefiting the child.

On a side note, there are options besides killing the fetus, namely adoption. Adoption is certainly not the easiest choice, but would be 'manning up' to the situation.

Good luck with this tough situation your in. And don't worry about going after the father (unless you keep the child)
