Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
My divorce case was filed March of 2011 and I have been traveling back and forth from California to chicago every couple of months. We have 2 children, ages 12 and 6. There is a history of domestic violence by the petitioner, my husband. On the first day of our divorce trial, the lawyers, the judge, and the child reps had a pretrial conference. Afterwards, the judge said she was not going to bifurcate it. What does this mean? Why did the judge do this?

Why aren't you asking your lawyer this? Bifurcation generally means that the divorce gets entered first and the custody and/or property issues are resolved later. Bifurcation is disfavored in Illinois except in extreme circumstances.
