Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Divorce or Seperation

Can you explain what the difference is between a Divorce and Legal Seperation? An attorney told me that if I file for Legal Seperation, I cannot then file for Divorce? Is this true?

Legal Separation is a mostly useless legal tool for people who feel guilty about asking for a divorce. You get all the cost and legal headaches of a divorce, without the satisfaction of finally ending it. You then have to go back and do a divorce in a year or so anyway.

It is almost always a bad idea. I have never done one that did not also get a divorce almost immediately.
