Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
Divorce
How do I start the process of obtaining a divorce? What should I expect with regards to cost, how long it will take, split of community property, spousal support?

Re: Divorce
That' a pretty complex question to answer...
Simply a dissolution of marriage case (divorce) is started by drafting and filing a petition for dissolution of marriage with the Circuit Court and having it served on your spouse by the Sheriff. Upfront court costs are around $350. It's hard to give a cost estimate without knowing anything about your marriage and assets. Are there kids? The last case I had that actually went to trial (no settlement) with no kids took 1.5 years to wrap up. But it's fairly unusual for a dissolution case to go to trial.
