Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

I was divorced in 2005 and custody of our 2 children was granted to my ex-husband. Is there a legal age that they can choose which parent they want to live with? What does the term "stale" mean and does it apply to custody cases?

The legal age when a child can choose where to live is 18. Stale is a concept meaning when something is dated and may no longer be relevant, such as a stale report is such when is a few years old. It has no definite period attached to it.
