Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Domestic Violence/Mental issues

My boyfriend and I got into a fight. he was off his meds (he is similar to bipolar) and he hit me. The police showed up because a neighbor called. I explained he had issues and was probably off his meds that day. They arrested him after I refused to sign a complaint. According to him the judge said after 72 hours we can see/talking to each other. His parents are telling a different story saying although he and I live together the judge says we cant have any contact until after the trial. Can a judge rule something like that considering we both live in the same house? He has no priors. Also, what can I do to help his case, he needs to stay medicated and I dont believe jail is a place for someone in his condition

Re: Domestic Violence/Mental issues

A judge can rule what he did (and he can so a lot more). The court's role is as a neutral party that can order parties to do things that are in the best interests of the parties, other parties, or public safety. For example, you not realizing how dangerous your boyfriend's behavior is does not mean the judge will follow be similarly silly.

Statistics show that a women who is a victim of domestic violence average 6 reports of abuse before finally leaving the losers that hit them, so you will probably hang around awhile until you are hit 5 more times or end up dead. Having two daughters, it is always sad to hear people in your position trying to help their abusers when you should be running away (fast!).

Good luck, and whatever you do, do not have a baby with your abuser.
