ending relationship

Ending a long term relationship, have been a stay at home mom for almost four years....he is getting a settlement for 25K from a work injury...would like to know if there's a way to put a claim, or lein, against this for 2 grand or so to cover bills while I try to find full time work...we have a daughter together. He will not voluntarily give me any money, there has been domestic violence in the past, and he is vindictive to the point that he will probably quit his job rather than pay child support.
