If engagement is broken off does the man have legal right to the ring he purchased

These cases come up every so often, it's sort of like this, it depends on who called off the engagement. In other words, if male buys ring and male calls off engagement, he's NOT entitled to ring back. But, if female calls off engagement, he IS entitled to ring back.
