Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
engagement
if a ring was given, but the couple never married, but lived together, is she entitled to anything? is it a common law marriege? can she be made to leave the home without cost or incident of any kind? can she be made to leave?

Re: engagement
The ring is the one exception to typical gift law since it is given as an exchange for becoming married, therefore you get the ring back. IL does not have common law marriage (thank god). If it is your home, and you want her to leave, you still have to legally evict her, since anyone has the right to continue to live where they have established residence until the court rules otherwise. If you "self-help" and kick her out, you will be in big trouble.
