Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
Getting my ex-atto rney to return or destroy my personal information
I went through a nasty divorce which took three years to finalize. After two and a half years of bad service from my attorney I fired him and hired someone else who finished the job promptly I gave the attorney I fired a lot of personal information. such as copies of pensions, savings, credit cards, social security info. How do I get him to return this information or assure me it has been properly destroyed? He does not return my calls an refuses to talk to me. I do not feel he has the right to maintain a personal file on me since he no longer is in my employ. How do I get him to return this info. or to assure me he has properly destroyed it?

Re: Getting my ex-atto rney to return or destroy my personal information
Sometimes, attorneys withhold documents because of an outstanding bill. Try to find out what the problem is by sending the attorney a registered letter. All information must be confidential, so I doubt that the attorney would do anything with your information. If you are not satisfied, then you could file a complaint at the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois. This will get the attorney's attention. You can get the Chicago phone number from dialing information.
