Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Ex-husband emotionally and verbally abusing child

My ex-husband whom I have joint custody is verbally and emotionally abusing my 3 year old son. It was so bad the other day that my child was depressed (meaning sadness so profound that he would not even eat). My child has also said that he is ''scared of Daddy.'' But there is no evidence of physical abuse. Is there anything I can do to protect my child? I believe that this abuse will only continue, and get even worse as my child grows.

Re: Ex-husband emotionally and verbally abusing child

If you are concerned about abuse, then you can file for sole custody of your child and possibly take additional steps through the legal system. You should also look into getting a counselor or social worker to help your son through this difficult time and advising you on the best way to deal with the boy's father outside of the Court system.
