Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
Ex-Spouse Trying to Collect on Money after Final Divorce Decree
I am currently living with a wealthy divorced man. He and his ex-wife used to live in Eastern Kentucky. Now the ex-wife lives in Illinois. My boyfriend recently tried to get his son to retreive some financial documents regarding his assets out of his safety deposit box in Illinois. His son was supposed to send them directly to him in Kentucky. Somehow the ex-wife was visiting the son and she found the documents and confiscated them. The ex-wife took these documents to her attorney to investigate whether my boyfriend had cheated her out of money that was due to her from the divorce. My boyfriend claims that when they divorced, he had not hidden any assets. On top of this the ex-wife has freezed his accounts so he cannot withdraw any money (to live, pay rent, pay bills, etc.)Is there any laws that the ex-wife is violating? Can't her attorneys and accountants do their investigations without freezing my boyfriend's assets. Has the ex-wife violated any privacy acts by intercepting my boyfriend's confidential financial records?
Thank you.

Re: Ex-Spouse Trying to Collect on Money after Final Divorce Decree
You need a lawyer to represent his interests. There is a lot of stuff going on here. She can only freeze his assets without his defending himself by going into court on an initial injunction, however, he will have his say in court within a very short period of time. Either way, you really need an attorney. Her stealing the documents is a whole other issue that should be dealt with after he clears this mess up.
