Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
I have an extremely toxic relationship with all but one of my family members. I also have reason to believe that my medical condition will get worse before it gets better. If I were hospitalized (or similar) I would greatly prefer the care of strangers than the care of my so-called family, and I want to disallow them from making medical, financial, estate or funerary, ANY decisions on my behalf. Basically, I want them to be no more than strangers who I don't talk to. Asking the 'good' family member to keep the others at bay is not a workable solution.
All I've seen or read about disowning family members involved filing restraining orders and breaking off communication. I've been told that restraining orders are only filed against people with a history of violence - this wouldn't work against my nonviolent/noncriminal but still toxic family.
Do you have any suggestions for getting rid of these people? The last thing I need while trying to get healthy is to worry about these people.

Just appoint someone you trust NOW with across the board Power of Attorney. If you get ill, only that person will be allowed to make decisions on your behalf.
