Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Guardianship of a minor

I would like to become the legal guardian for my nephew. His mother has agreed to this. The father hasn't been in the child's life for several years and we don't know his whereabouts.

I believe I'll have to publish a notice for the father since we can't locate him. My question is how long will the notice have to be published? I'm interested in knowing how long this process will set back me taking guardianship. Thank you.

Re: Guardianship of a minor

This is not simply a process of getting guardianship, you also have to remove parental rights (particularly the fathers). I would like to know what you actually want to accomplish and see if guardianship is the right step for you. I can tell you that becoming the only person with parental/legal authority over a child is much more than filling out guardianship papers. Feel free to contact me if you wish to explain your situation further.
