guardianship question

When I was 17 I fathered a child. I was going into the military. Before I left, the mother of the child and I, signed a court agreement in the state of IL (Will county) with my parents. The court papers I have read ''The paternal grandparents are hereby granted the care, custody, control and education of the minor child, subject to both the plantiff (me) and the defendant's (child's mother) right of reasonable visitation upon reasonable advanced notice. I was then asked to pay child support to my parents, an agreement which has been honored. My son has lived with my parents ever since. He and I do not have the best relationship and I have been in and out of his life. Now, my son is 21 and threatening to sue me for back child support and payment of his college education costs. Can he do this?

Back child support - only if you did not pay. But you indicate that you paid so I do not know why he feels there is child support owing.

College Education - no, you are only obligated to pay until the child is 18 absent some kind of order to the contrary made earlier on.

I hope you will be able to work out some kind of better relationship. It sounds like your son may need the money and I am sure you would like to help.
