can a hearing be sheduled without telling the defendant what is to be discussed? The notice of hearing only said "all pending matters" leaving no way to prepare for defense.

Yes. You prepare a defense based on documents which should have previously been served on you whether for support, visitation, past-due amounts, or non-compliance with prior court orders.
