Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Home state

how long does it take for a state to become your home state? The reason I am asking is because my son and I moved to Illionis from Kansas more theen 6 months ago, and I need to know how to change our home state from Kansas to Illoinis.

Re: Home state

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "home state"? There are many different contexts in legal matters where things like residence is defined in different ways. What do you want to do? Something in court? In the domestic relations context, the "home state" concept doesn't require you to do anything, what it means is that once a state is the "home state" of a child for 6 months, then that state's court has jurisdiction over things like child support and custody matters. You don't DO anything until you want or need to do things in court.
