Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
My husband filed for divorce citing physical and mental cruelty, but when I was supposed to go to trial, I hired a lawyer and he held a pretrial conference and he drew up a custody agreement awarding custody to my husband. Then the judge said that she was not going to bifurcate it. I wanted to defend myself. He has been abusive to me and caused me to leave the house. I am currently living in California and this divorce is a burden to me. I have to keep flying back and forth. I wanted to contest grounds. What does bifurcation mean? Is this bad for me?
