Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
My husband has been paying alimony and child support for 12 years. He was married for 18 years. Child support just ended and the ex turns around and petitions for an increase. She has done very little to become self-supportive other than being a person trainer, part-time. She is able bodied, but lazy. We were fine continuing to pay her $3100 per month in alimony, but she wants more due to loss of child support. We have two new little kids together and I don't think she should get more just because she wants to live off our money. However, my husband's salary has increased significantly since they got divorced. My attorney says that could hurt us. Not fair. How likely is she to get an increase in alimony. BTW - we are in Illinois

Many variables. She had and had a duty to seek employment, and becoming a personal trainer may not be enough. However, in this economy, it is also hard to become employed. You having no issue with paying her 3100 per month means your h's income is probably significant, I would think there is a reasonable basis for termination. But the process will be expensive, frankly.
