Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My husband and I retained an attorney to seek custody of my stepdaughter from her abusive home environment. The attorney accepted the case and the retainer, but, as of yet, after 9 months, the case hasn't move forward, and he's not returning my calls. What are my remedies?

How do you expect to get custody of your "step-daughter" in the first place? Is this your husband's daughter or the daughter of a former husband? It makes a big difference. If it is your husband's daughter, its his case and it may well be that he and the attorney have an agreement of which you are unaware and he's simply not telling you about it. If it is a former husband's daughter, you have almost no chance of getting custody so you are just wasting your money to begin with. If you think the case is not moving forward because you are not winning, that is not the same thing as the attorney not pursuing your case. Either way, if you want to file a complaint contact the ARDC in Springfield or Chicago or do what Mr. Shimberg advised, get a new attorney.
