Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My husband and I would like to separate but not necessarily get divorced. Do we need a to file a legal separation with the court system? Also, if we do but end up resolving our differences, how do we "cancel" the legal separation?

People "separate" all the time, without court filings. Things can get messy that way, however, especially if both parties have to establish their own place of residence, pay rent, utilities, etc., because there would be no court order assigning responsibilities for the economics. As to a reconciliation, parties can have an agreed order of dismissal entered.
