Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My in-laws are getting a divorce because the father is abusive, but most people think he is a "great guy". Is it legal to post true stories of his lies and abuse on Facebook?

"Truth" is an absolute defense to defamation. But if he gets angry enough and sues, defending yourself means proving whatever the "truth" is. If you aren't absolutely sure you can do so, then spreading defamatory comments could be really dangerous.
