Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

interstate child support mess

hi; i was divorced in buffalo new york in 1990. in 1994 all parties moved out of new york state. me {father non custodial parent} moved to michigan wife and three children went to illinois. in 1996 il. modified the oldest because she turned 18. il. then modified the second child in 1999 at 18. in 1999 i opened a uifsa case for the purpose or record keeping. i called michigan friend of court to stop support on my last child and they said, upon reading your divorce decree we decided, as far as the age of majority wording {they say is silent} they will not stop support untill he is 21. when i was divorced in 1990 the law was 18. new york addopted uifsa jan. 1 1997 and changed the age of majority to 21. after all that my question is how can new york dictate to illinois when they have no jurisdiction and the divorce decree was entered in illinois as a foreign judjment in 1999? someone please help me, and as a nightmere what if they change the law to 23 like in some states i will go out of my mind. ps, i have never been late on payments actually i am over paid 5 weeks.

The court has to look at the intent of the parties upon entry of the judgment of divorce. New York law is presumed to control as that was what the parties were using when the judgment was entered. therefore, you are probably stuck. William S. Stern
