Do you need a layer to petition for a name change in the state of Illinois?

No. As long as the reason for the name change is for a legal purpose, it is a routine matter approved by the court.

No. You can petition the court pro se (on your own). Ask the court clerk to give you information in filing a name change. This is a chancery action. Requirements include proper publication in a newspaper. Failing to file proper procedure will lead to denial. Also you should be able to give the judge a valid reason for the name change.
