Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
What should I do before I leave?
I want to leave my husband. He is an attorney and I am concerned about what will happen. I don't wish to stay in the same town because I am concerned how he will conduct himself. He has been violent with me in the past and has threatened to be violent if I leave, and has threatened to stalk me. We have two children together. I don't want to keep them from him, but I am afraid what he will do to me legally and physically. I know the only way to leave is to do it without his knowledge and move away. I have thought about this for two years now and I can't stay any longer, but I have to be smart about this for the children's sake and my safety. What should I do to prepare? I don't make a lot of money and retaining an attorney would be difficult not only financially but also because of his profession. I'm not that concerned about marital property...I just want mine and my children's personal things and a safe departure. The rest can either be sorted out in court or he can keep it. I can't tell you how bad I need to leave this marriage as it has become a nightmare for the children and I. The place I want to move to is approximately 175 miles away and within the state. Can I do this? Please help.

Get an attorney and get an order of protection. You can move within the State.
