Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Legal Separation

Husband is on disability (arthritis), with no medical insurance. Wife employed full time, covering husband on medical insurance. Living together intolerable. Divorce possibly not necessary if separation possible. Both agree to sell home and live separately - husband to purchase another home - wife to purchase condo. Neither to have an interest in the other's dwelling, 401K or individual investments. Does the agreement divide property and material possessions if both parties agree to the division? Does a legal separation protect both parties from financial obligations incurred after the separation?
