what's the difference between legal separation and divorce costs

If you mean filing fees with the court...in Cook County there's no difference $294 for both. That's among the reasons why "legal separations" occur very rarely. Further, a separation only deals with child support and maintenance...it doesn't do anything regarding dividing property, custody and visitation. The only reasons we generally give for the "legal separation" are persons who must remain on one spouses health insurance or sometimes people oppose divorce for religious reaons.

Separation is a lot cheaper in total fess and costs, but you do not have a real resolution to your issues. You just make an agreement to disagree.

Most separations turn into divorces.
