Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

I was married 16 years ago to a Japanese man who wanted to stay in the United States. After we were married he left and returned to Japan. I have not seen or heard from him since. I am in a relationship now and we want to get married. I don't know if I am still legally married and if I am how to I absolve the marriage? The marriage was a civil ceremony in chicago, Il. I now live in Ohio.

Contact the county clerk and have them check, or contact the Illinois Dept. of Vital Records. If you're marriage is still on the books, you should be able to get a divorce in Ohio with little or no difficulty.
