Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Never Married ... My Ex and I have a 4yr old daughter ... We live in IL and her father lives in NY ... I am considering about filing for sole custody and changeing her last name from the hyphaned last name to my last name only. How does this work? i do not have money to do court fees and pay attorny's so my options are limited :(

You do not have an ex, as in spouse. You have custody unless there is a court order saying otherwise. In order to change her name, you have to file an action to change her name, and you have to give him notice.
