Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois
medical bills and pending marriage
My brother is about to marry a woman who has 500000 worth of medical bills to pay. He has a good job and a condo. Will he possibly get a lien put on his house if they get married. Should she file bankruptcy before the marriage? He is responsible for half of this debt correct? What should he be aware of? There is no way he could pay this debt....

Re: medical bills and pending marriage
Your brother is not liable unless for some unknown reason he agreed to be liable. That typically isn't the case. If he owns a house that she has no ownership interest in, the creditors should be unable to put a lien on the house.
