Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

How to go about obtaining a passport for my child for an upcoming vacation to Europe? Her father is on her birth certificate but we were never married. He has had no contact to with her since shortly after she was born(she's 8 now) and we have never gone to court and he does not pay child support. I've looked into obtaining it with one parent but they want documentation. I live in Illinois so I believe I automatically have sole custody but how do I prove that??. I would like not to have to go court if at all possible. Thank you!!

You still need either his consent or an order of court because of State Dept regs.
