Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

My parents lived apart for thirty years prior to my mother's death. They had separated all financial matters and each their own houses, cars and incomes. They both filed separately on taxes, my mother stating that she was "single" on her taxes.

She always told me she got a "poor man's divorce."

Is this "poor man's divorce" recognized by law or were they still considered married at the time of her death? State of Illinois

Just as there is no such thing as a common law marriage in the State of Illinois, there is no such thing as a common law divorce. Unless a court ordered them divorced, they were still married, no matter what they put on a tax return.
