Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Personal property locked up

A lady promised marriage and allowed me to move in while selling my condo. Then, without warning, lawyered up and changed locks. Lawyer writes intimidating letters. For 3+ months now, I have not been able to retrieve my belongings. How to proceed? Police say I must file a civil suit, costing more money.

Re: Personal property locked up

You need to file a replevin action.

Yes it will cost money. You may add a count for conversion and retrieve your fees.

Just do a simple cost benefit analysis.

Do you want your property back? What is it worth to you?

email me if you have any questions.

Replevin is the right action, but I would also file a suit for her promise to marry. I also would learn from this in terms of leaving your stuff in other people's home. Anyway, it depends on how tough you want to be with her.
