You will probably need to complete a Illinois Statutory Short Form Power of Attorney for Property (see Illinois Power of Attorney Act 755 ILCS 45/3-3). It can be easily prepared and will grant you powers to complete any of the financial business you son may have while he is away. For example, your son will grant you thepower to: Make real estate or personal property transactions; Control all bank (or other financial institution) transactions or accounts; Contribute to or withdraw from any retirement plans; Deal with any type of insurance or annuity policy or transaction; Handle all tax matters; Buy and sell all types of stocks and securities; Open and control safe deposit boxes; Bring or defend or settle all claims or lawsuits; Conduct all business operations; Borrow money or mortgage property; Handle legacies, bequests, or other estate transactions.
