Legal Question in Family Law in Illinois

Prep for divorce

Should I get a lawyer and list all my financial information to prepare for a divorce. My wife says I'm about to be served. I too want the divorce but I have a lot of financial obligations, and just started back working at a new company.

Re: Prep for divorce

You are required by law to prepare all your financial information in a divorce. It is good to prepare for a divorce and critical that you have a divorce attorney with you when you make any decision or statement regarding the divorce (especially to your spouse!).

It is frustrating when people make critical errors early in a divorce, and come to me to try to fix it. Oftentimes you can't "unring the bell" and all that can be done is damage control. As a lawyer I am biased about whether you need an attorney, but I have seen some pretty big mistakes clients made before retaining me. I can pretty easily state that it was never cheaper because they hired me part way into the divorce (or god forbid after the divorce to try to undo something).
